Brian Hitt, Olympic High School
Brian received his BA at NC State and his JD at Widener University (Delaware), as well as his Teacher Certificate from Queens University.  He’s been teaching Social Studies at Olympic for 5 years and he will visit their partner school in Berlin, Germany. His classes exchange emails with their counterparts at the school and engage in discussions on topics relating to both countries. The Germans have visited Olympic twice but they have never had the opportunity to reciprocate.

Natasha Thompson, International Studies School at Garinger
Natasha has never been abroad and will be the principal at the new International Studies School at Garinger, which opens in the fall. Natasha taught for 5 years before moving to administration for 5 years. She received her BA in English Education at NC A&T University and her Master of School Administration at UNC Charlotte. She will go on a program organized by Global Links, called the Global Educators Program. She will gain input from her faculty and students in the fall as to where she will go based on three global areas the school will focus on (China, South Africa, or a Spanish-speaking country).

Marie Calabro, Beverly Woods Elementary
Marie has been teaching for 21 years and for 4 ½ years at Beverly Woods. She teaches Special Education (all subjects) and received her BA from Saint Leo University (Florida) in Elementary Education/Mental Retardation. She is an avid songwriter and guitar player (she occasionally performs in coffee houses in Charlotte with her three teenagers) and will go to Ireland on an Irish Folk Music tour to compare it with NC Appalachian folk music and integrate it into the 4th grade curriculum study on North Carolina.

Yevgenia Arutyunyan, Charlotte Country Day
Originally from Russia, she received her BA from Davidson College in History and her MA in Liberal Studies from Wake Forest University. She has been teaching a variety of world history courses at Country Day for the past 6 years and has a wealth of international experience under her belt. Yevgenia is excited about her plans to study Arabic and Islamic culture next summer at Damascus University in Syria. While she has enjoyed studying with a private tutor for the past year, she is looking forward to using her Arabic in real-life situations with a host family organized by Arabesk.
