EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH
Each year the World Affairs Council of Charlotte gives away over $20,000 to teachers and students in Charlotte-Mecklenburg and surrounding counties! Since 1996 we have directly impacted almost 700 teachers who in turn have impacted over 70,000 students.
Academic WorldQuest

Teams from each local public and independent high school in the greater Charlotte region are invited to compete in this international knowledge competition on questions relating to foreign policy, geography, current events, and more. Academic WorldQuest has grown in popularity that participating schools have assigned coaches and teams who compete for the honor of representing their school in this competition. This program encourages an understanding for global issues and team building in a very engaging (and fun) way. The winning school is then invited to participate in the national Academic WorldQuest held in Washington, D.C.

Check our details for Academic WorldQuest 2011.
This year, Academic WorldQuest 2011 will be played jointly with WorldQuest, the community version of this competition.

Speaker in the Classroom

We have successful education collaborations with UNC Charlotte, Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC), Davidson College, Charlotte School of Law and Queens University of Charlotte. These partnerships allow us to bring speakers on campus as part of our education outreach mission. Students and faculty members have the opportunity to listen and learn from world-renowned authors, state and government leaders, and experts on international issues. We provide similar opportunities to Charlotte Mecklenburg County Schools through roundtable discussions with international experts.

Council Scholar Program

This program, generously sponsored by Wells Fargo, Carolinas HealthCare System, BAE Systems, Presbyterian Healthcare, German Language & Culture Foundation and UNC Charlotte recognizes outstanding Charlotte area administrators and teachers, grades K-12, who have demonstrated a commitment to, and interest in international education. The grant of $2,500 may be used to attend international conferences or to participate in study abroad programs.  Past Council Scholars have been able to bring back and share with their students new perspectives, which have enriched and enhanced the classroom experience for all involved.

International Language Luncheon

This program recognizes junior and senior high school students from public and private schools in Mecklenburg County with outstanding language skills.  Students who excel at speaking French, Spanish, or German are brought together in a social atmosphere and provided with the opportunity to interact with speakers fluent in their chosen language. Local students consider invitations to this luncheon an honor and a sign of excellence.

International Career Panel

This special event allows college students at UNC Charlotte to learn from experts in the fields of international business, international education, the Peace Corps, and the State Department. The panel openly talks about their experiences and offers valuable advice to those about to enter the job market. Students find this type of program very helpful in pursuing their goals to work in international fields.

Center for Leadership and Global Economics (L&GE)

This magnet program in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools invites children to become students of the world through exposure to global issues and cultures. Primary areas of focus are academics, leadership and teamwork, global awareness, and responsible and ethical decision making. The program offers students opportunities to participate in authentic exercises to enhance their leadership skills. The World Affairs Council of Charlotte is one of several local organizations partnering with the L&GE program. For educators to share their knowledge of the world with their students, they must first have a certain comfort level with the subject matter. Through teacher workshops on various regions of the world, grant opportunities that underwrite programs and travel abroad, and access to more than 100 unique program ideas for all age levels, the Council hopes to make these educators jobs just a little bit easier. The Council will also provide the schools with speakers who can enlighten both teachers and students to international current events.
