The
World Affairs Council of Charlotte Celebrates Academic
WorldQuest Trivia Competition; Three
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Area Schools Win Prizes
Charlotte,
N.C. –
The World Affairs Council of Charlotte hosted the tenth
annual Academic WorldQuest on Monday, November 17, 2008
at the First Presbyterian Church (200 W. Trade Street.).
Teams from 20 Charlotte-area high schools participated
in this international trivia competition and answered
questions on history, current events, geography,
international faces in the news, and other categories.
The event was sponsored by The Map Shop and CPI Security
Systems, Inc. This year, Providence Day School won first
place as they tested their knowledge of current world
events, geography, and world history.
Members of the Providence
Day School team include Vidur Kukrija, Ian Noblitt,
Michael Greshko, John Osborne, Cindy Cammarn, Michael
Starr, Tyler Brown, Colby Olliver and coach, Gordon
Bynum. Each student won a gift certificate to Barnes &
Nobles, and the school will represent the Charlotte area
in the national competition on April 4, 2009.
Second and third place
winners were Charlotte Country Day School (CCDS) and
Providence High School. All three teams will participate
in the local community WorldQuest competition in spring
2009.

Marvin Ridge High School, Weddington High School,
Charlotte Christian School, Harding University High
School, Independence High School, Porter Ridge High
School, and Butler High School.
WorldQuest originated with
the World Affairs Council of Charlotte in 1996 and is
now played by other Councils throughout the United
States.
The World Affairs Council
of Charlotte is a non-profit, non-partisan organization
that focuses on improving international education and
encourages the community to participate in the national
debate on world affairs. The council invites renowned
speakers to discuss current events and topics ranging
from economics to globalization to foreign policy.
