The World Affairs Council of Charlotte announces its annual
Council Scholar Awards designed to reward outstanding
teachers (K-12) in Mecklenburg County and surrounding areas
who have demonstrated commitment and interest in
international education. Funded by The Wachovia Foundation,
CPI Security Systems, and the Federal Republic of Germany;
the Council Scholar Program celebrates 15-years of
supporting international education in the Charlotte area.

"Father of the Indian Green Revolution” and World Food Prize
Winner; He Discussed the Worldwide Food Shortage and Hunger
Crisis.
Charlotte, NC, June 10, 2008 – Dr. M S Swaminathan, “Father
of Green Revolution in India,” World Food Prize Winner in
1987 and world-renowned agricultural geneticist spoke at the
World Affairs Council Voyager’s Club program on Monday, June
9th at 6:30 PM. Special guests, C.L. Vishin,
President of the Indian Association in Charlotte and Dr.
Jayaraman Raja, newly named Senior Associate Provost of UNC
Charlotte attended the event.

Professor Michael T. Klare, Author of “Rising Powers,
Shrinking Planet: The New Geopolitics of Energy” to speak at
WACC Speaker Series Luncheon on May 8, 2008
Charlotte, N.C., May 1, 2008 – Professor Michael T. Klare will
speak at the World Affairs Council of Charlotte Speaker
Series Luncheon on Thursday, May 8, 2008 at 12 PM at the
Charlotte City Club.
In his just-published book, “Rising Powers, Shrinking
Planet: The New Geopolitics of Energy” Klare asserts
that international power is not dependent on a country’s
military might, but rather on its available energy
resources.
Today, the
key global commodity is oil and oil underlines and affects
most, if not all major geostrategic and geopolitical
challenges facing the U.S.A. What are the consequences of
higher oil demand and prices for the U.S.?

Affairs Council of Charlotte Honors Student Excellence in
German Language: Charlotte-Mecklenburg Area Students
Participate in Language Luncheon
Charlotte, N.C., May 13, 2008
–
The World Affairs Council of Charlotte will host its German
Language Luncheon on Thursday, May 15th, 2008 at
12:00 PM at
Waldhorn Restaurant (12101 Lancaster Hwy). Students and
teachers from 15 Charlotte-area high schools will
participate in the Language Luncheon to honor
high school students with outstanding German language
conversation skills. Special guest Hon. Kurt Waldthausen,
Honorary Consul of Germany, will speak at the luncheon. The
German Language Luncheon is also co-sponsored by the Federal
Republic of Germany, Charlotte Latin School and the
German-American Chamber of Commerce.
