discussion on Thursday, October 15th, 2009 at
Pura Vida. Theresa Hernandez, owner of Pura Vida
will provide coffee and dessert at minimal cost.
We have selected
"The
Places in Between" by Rory Stewart.
Check your
local library and definitely the Internet
for a reasonably priced book. In addition,
consider sharing/exchanging the book with a
friend.
Book discussions may be daunting for those of
you who have limited time. A short summary of
the book and some discussion questions will be
provided one-week before the discussion date.
So if you didn't read the book, you'd still be
able to participate in the book discussion!
Facilitated by Rebecca Vincent, International
Initiatives Coordinator (UNC Charlotte) and
former lecturer (conflict
resolution/international negotiations) in the
International Studies department, this program
will be an engaging way to talk about international
affairs in an informal setting.
In January 2002 Rory Stewart walked across
Afghanistan -- surviving by his wits, his
knowledge of Persian dialects and Muslim
customs, and the kindness of strangers. Along
the way Stewart met heroes and rogues, tribal
elders and teenage soldiers, Taliban commanders
and foreign-aid workers. He was also adopted by
an unexpected companion -- a retired fighting
mastiff he named Babur in honor of Afghanistan's
first Mughal emperor, in whose footsteps the
pair was following
