DECEMBER 2008

Join the World Affairs Council of Charlotte for an evening of Belgian crepes, Syrian delights, and wine!

We have the pleasure of hosting an enlightening Voyager’s Club program on Friday, December 5th, 2008 at 6:30 p.m. with two of our 2007 Council Scholar winners, Jean Gigliotti and Yevgenia Arutyunyan. This is your opportunity to hear engaging presentations on their education trips to Belgium and Syria respectively and how those experiences help shape international education in the Charlotte-area school communities.

Both educators will provide a country update with a presentation on their experiences, insight from their trip and the impact to the education community in Charlotte followed by a photography slideshow from their individual trips. As the Council continues to partner with local educational institutions and reaching out to both educators and students, it’s our privilege to be part of a growing international education community in Charlotte

Ms. Gigliotti shares that she “left Charlotte as a French teacher, but I came back as part of a French teaching community, full of support systems, experiences, and ideas…. As the governor of Liege explained one night during a kick-off to the conference, “You know, Liege is just like a town in America called Pittsburgh, with is industrial and blue-collar past.” How strangely comforting it was to be seated at a dinner, halfway around the world with the governor of a small French-speaking town in Belgium, discussing my hometown of Pittsburgh” – Jeannie Gigliotti (South Mecklenburg High School)

Online registration is closed. If you are interested in being placed on the "STAND-BY" list, please call the Council at 704-687-7762 or e-mail info@worldaffairscharlotte.org.

Professor M S Swaminathan

Professor M S Swaminathan has been acclaimed by the TIME magazine as one of the twenty most influential Asians of the 20th century and one of the only three from India, the other two being Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore. The India Today, a leading journal of India , has described him as one of the 60 most eminent Indians. He has been described by the United Nations Environment Program as "the Father of Economic Ecology" because of his leadership of the ever-green revolution movement in agriculture and by Javier Perez de Cuellar, Secretary General of the United Nations, as "a living legend who will go into the annals of history as a world scientist of rare distinction".

A plant geneticist by training, Professor Swaminathan's contributions to the agricultural renaissance of India have led to his being widely referred to as the scientific leader of the green revolution movement.  His advocacy of sustainable agriculture leading to an ever-green revolution makes him an acknowledged world leader in the field of sustainable food security.

“Living in the Amazon Basin Today: Stories and Slides”

The Amazon Basin is under severe threat, with political, economic and environmental interests colliding daily. Mr. Rioja talked about what it means to live in the region today, and shared slides and stories of his home, the Amazon Basin. Mr. Rioja lives in Iquitos, Peru and is employed by Explorama, the owner of several Amazon River lodges, where he works as a naturalist and river guide. Mr. Rioja has worked with scientists from the JASON Project, Smithsonian, Earth Watch, and National Geographic on helping preserve the Amazon habitat.

Council members and friends enjoyed a home-cooked international themed meal prepared by Dr. Marie-Clare Marroum . With such dishes as: couscous with grilled lamb and chicken, stuffed grape leaves and much more. They also enjoyed a variety of international wines and desserts. Mr. Cliver Rioja provided members with valuable insight into the issues of the Amazon Basin with a wonderful yet troubling slide show.
